We publish scholarly books two ways. Open Access, where the ebook is free for anyone in the world to read and the author pays a publishing fee. And Traditional, where there is no publishing fee and the author earns royalties as the book sells. Same peer review. Same editorial bar. You choose the route that fits your book.
Some authors write to put knowledge in front of as many readers as possible, with no paywall in the way. Others are writing a book they want to sell, and want to earn from it as it sells. We don't think either goal should be turned away, so we publish both ways.
Under Open Access, the author or editor pays a publishing fee, and in exchange the ebook is hosted freely for any reader anywhere in the world. No royalties apply, since there's no sale to share. Under Traditional publishing, there is no fee to the author at all. The book is sold as an ebook and in print, and the author is paid royalties on those sales. Every manuscript, on either route, goes through the same peer review and editorial process.
Open Access and Traditional are two complete publishing routes, not a base plan with upsells. There are no paid add-ons under either one. What differs between them is the fee, the royalty, and how the ebook reaches readers.
Open Access titles from Scholedge Publishing are distributed across major academic platforms and open repositories. Traditional titles are sold through retail and academic channels. Print editions are available for purchase through retail channels globally, on either route.
Shipping on print orders is billed at actual cost. *DOAB and OAPEN list open access titles only, as per their own mandate. Open Access books are submitted to these platforms after publication, while Traditional titles are not, since they are sold rather than freely hosted.
These standards apply to every book we publish. They are not aspirational statements. They are operating requirements for every manuscript we accept and every publication we release.
All publication decisions are made on scholarly merit alone. Choosing Open Access or Traditional carries no weight in the editorial decision and does not guarantee acceptance.
All manuscripts submitted to Scholedge Publishing undergo rigorous peer review. We coordinate with qualified reviewers appropriate to the subject area of the manuscript.
Authors confirm that the submitted work is original, not previously published in substantially the same form, and not under simultaneous consideration elsewhere.
All manuscripts are screened for originality. Plagiarism, data fabrication, and duplicate publication are grounds for rejection or, post-publication, retraction.
Authors disclose any relationships that could appear to influence the research. Reviewers and editors with conflicts of interest recuse themselves from the relevant manuscript.
Post-publication errors are corrected promptly and transparently. Retractions are handled according to established best practices in scholarly publishing.
Research involving human subjects must confirm that ethical approval was obtained and that informed consent was secured where required by the applicable framework.
Ebooks published under Open Access carry a Creative Commons licence, with terms stated clearly on the publication. Traditional titles are published under standard copyright. Authors retain copyright either way.
Every publishing relationship begins with a conversation. Fill in the form below and let us know if you're leaning toward Open Access or Traditional, or if you'd like our recommendation. There is no cost to enquire and no commitment at this stage. We respond within 2–3 working days.
